Title: Doppelganger Blood
Fandom; The Vampire Diaries
Characters; Katherine, mentions of Elena, Klaus and Elijah.
Word count; ~1400
Summary; Katherine has learned many secrets over the years and as always she has a plan. Set post 4x14.
AN; I've tried to get this done before the new episode, so I hope it's still okay. Feedback is much appreciated.

Katherine slinks and slides, master of shadows as always. They run around in their search and she just watches, listens, waits, to steal it out from under them. She crushes berries between her teeth, wanting for something bitter to cut the sweetness.

She keeps an eye on all surroundings as the boulders rain down, guiding them out of the teenagers’ paths, nudging one towards the professor; snapping Shane’s leg like kindling. She sighs as she hears an approach in the distance. It was always going to be Elena trailing behind them. Katherine turns back and instantly knocks her out, unseen. She slides gel through her hair, sticking it straight; it will last no more than a half hour but she doesn’t need it to, it’s only necessary to sneak up on the witch and the hunter. She acts like quickly, discarding the façade like lightning, pulls the arm of Elena’s little brother into Silas’ death hold.

Elena is only just beginning to understand what it is to be a doppelganger. This is just one of the lessons; you will be loved by all, yet left completely alone. It seems pertinent to teach it now, draw Elena into her, make her likeness into her in this moment where she will finally reach for the crown. Katherine has always looked out for herself, known she’s alone in doing so, used others for her ends and cast them aside.

It took a long time to realise that her wiles were a lot more than wiles alone; there was something inherent in doppelgangers; it draws people in, someone put it in them; an in-built safety catch to protect them and in turn protect the curse. And she learned to hone that, make it so once they were lured in they never wanted to leave. A litany of men over the years; some names she remembers; Elijah and Trevor, Stefan and Damon, Noah, Mason. Others she doesn’t; guards, house owners, thieves, patsies, cannon fodder.

“Katherine,” they all say in that special tone.

“She looks like Katherine,” they say in that special tone.

“Elena,” they say in that same special tone.

People covet Elena in just the same way and she too has found a way to keep them even though she may not realise it; that sparkling allure of self-sacrifice and compassionate intuition. Matt and Bonnie and Caroline. And her boys too. Elijah and Damon and Stefan. But every one of Elena’s family dies, just like Katherine’s before her. This is the lot of the doppelganger. That’s who Jeremy is; their difference, so she kills him (or as good as).

Katherine slips out the ancient box with deft fingers and flashes away like a ghost. She takes her one man boat and with the cure box held firm between her knees, rows towards Klaus; it’s after all what everyone is expecting and she doesn’t want to ruin the surprise (she has waited too long to be tripped up at the last minute).
Over the centuries she has learned much of what it means to be a doppelganger. To be born a sacrifice, to be born a creature that must run and manipulate and crush to survive. But she has also learned of the mythology; a creature whose blood is needed to break a curse, whose blood is needed to sire a race, blood that is needed to grant life itself to thousands of hybrids. A creature whose blood itself is power.

It took a long time, but she now knows how to tap into the power; now all she needs is the blood.

She compels her way into a house on the edge of Mystic Falls and sits in a small attic bedroom opening the box with care; she’s going to miss being a vampire but doesn’t allow herself to dwell on the nostalgic. She knocks back the foul, stale scented liquid, clenching her throat and forcing it to stay down.

Nothing happens for a while but she just waits patiently, kicked back on the bed, swigging from a whiskey flask she finds in the bedside drawer. There are plans already made for every eventuality, including the cure not working, there’s no reason for concern. Suddenly breath comes back into her body and she finds herself warmer to some extent, she’s half blind and half deaf and weak.

In this moment she’s vulnerable but it will be the last. There’s no time to fixate on the new sensations and she doesn’t waste any, except to take note of what could help and hinder her. She focuses on that place inside her, on the power waiting to be released, does the same she has done hundreds of times before in preparation for this moment, finds that ineffable thing that has always shied away from her and her vampire form. And pulls hard. It’s agonising, fire over her flesh, but she carries on. Until the power dormant in her veins is running through her. An electric glow of ecstasy flooding her body. She is energy. She is life itself. She holds out her hand and tries to raise the row of houses opposite off their foundations just to test her power. They all come away with little effort and she smiles in her victory, not with the houses but with everything. For once feeling merciful she sets them back down gently.

This is going to be fun.

Katherine stands in the face of Klaus finally able to smile at him, and she smiles wide mimicking him. Throws him to the ground and when he runs at her with fury she throws him back down, relishes in the shot of fear in his eyes. He breaks off a wooden table top and runs at her.

“Good luck with getting that to work.” She chuckles, twisting his body in on itself without touching him.

“What have you done Katerina,” Klaus asks darkly. She tears off his limbs in response.

She carries his body to his brother and makes each other watch as she plays with them both; her new toys. Elijah has a resigned, almost pitying, expression upon his face and she wants to rip it off but she keeps her smile in place and doesn’t show how it bothers her. She focuses on Klaus, apoplectic in the wake of her actions. It’s amusing.

After several weeks she leaves them, trapped, for her to play with later; be that years or decades she hasn’t yet decided.

She doesn’t stop at Klaus and Elijah, she goes after the power who had the gall to do this to her. Starting with Esther; pulls her down from wherever she is. Esther is calm, placid, but it doesn’t bother her in the way Elijah did; she can appreciate the woman’s stance.

“No power such as yours can be allowed to exist. You will be destroyed. They will come for you,” Esther states plainly.

“I’m counting on it,” Katherine replies.

Tears Esther apart too. Traps her spirit into a locket and hangs it about her son’s neck, so she may be forced to watch for all eternity.

Various beings come to stop her; she works her way up the ladder of power, destroying all she finds. Allows them to appreciate her glory and rue their actions. Makes them quake in the thought of their previous nonchalant belief that they could make a pawn of her and expect her to not become a queen.

They wrought this on themselves when they allowed doppelganger magic to come into existence.

Katherine rips at the world because she can. The world never gave her a thing and she never expected a thing from it. It owed her nothing and she owes it nothing in turn. She has no loyalty. She makes her own way.

She misses not having to run sometimes; it was never boring. But she makes her own fun.

At some point the almighty dick powers, call them what you will, find a way to turn Elena human; to stop Katherine. But they misunderstand. Elena was never the hero of this piece. The girl lets them teach her and then turns on them, takes a page from Katherine’s book.

She comes after Katherine then because there’s nothing better to do.

“I will never be you,” Elena says as they stand before each other.

“You’re not me. But only in the ways that no longer matter,” Katherine replies.

They fight each other across the earth like the bored Goddesses they are.

Thank you, so glad you liked it :).

Actually I've already noted a couple of the prompts I would like to fill, if I have enough ideas I might write them ;).

What a great thought-provoking piece of writing! I don't like Katherine but you made me admire her in this! Well done!

Thank you, so happy to hear I managed to make you admire her with this :).

And I'm glad you found it thought provoking, I've wondered a lot of things about doppelgangers, especially having blood that holds such power and what the consequences of that could mean and also the strange habit of people gravitating towards them, so I thought I'd puzzle it out in a fic.

You are very strong when it comes to fic ideas....and teasing those out. Have you considered writing longer? I tend to veer away from reading longer fic...and don't write it...I have a theory about fanfic and the slow burn that can be achieved in less than 5,000 words....but your ideas could prove truly exciting in a longer "show don't tell" approach.

Thanks :). I have written a few longer fics, mainly for 10,000 word bigbangs, (they can be found in my masterlist) but it takes a lot of planning for me. I do have issues with 'telling' instead of 'showing' a lot, I tell myself off often ;), to the point where I often write it in my natural style of 'telling' first and then go through and turn bits more into 'showing'.

Well...if you need encouragement or a sounding board or a beta...I will volunteer. I think you really have a HUGE TVD fic inside of you....that plays on your own particular theory(ies). I would probably wait until the end of S4...and then spend the summer on it. I think we're in for some very bad things tonight and probably a few more before the season is finished and you probably don't want to write completely AU.

Ooh, I would absolutely love to have you as a beta and sounding board. Yes, it would be better to wait until the seasons end. I'm already having ideas now. This summer. It is a plan :D.

*smooch* Yes!!!! If you don't already own Scrivener you might consider it. If you work oldskool, then create yourself a folder and begin jotting down ideas, saving images that inspire, and we'll have a ton of fun come season's end!!!
